There are myths about everything from getting too much sleep is bad for you to the belief that deodorant causes cancer. The same goes for diets, including the keto diet. People pick up “facts” on Pinterest, Instagram, and other social media sites and assume that what they're reading is true. However, the so-called facts that they're reading couldn't be further from the truth.
Here are a few keto diet myths that are proven wrong below.
The first is that it’s unhealthy–and to that, the answer is solidly that NO it is not.
But it can be–especially if a person is on Pinterest pinning a bunch of fatty keto recipes that only address ketosis and not the nutrition that a person absolutely still needs, regardless.
Second is that putting the body into ketosis isn’t “natural” and it is bad for people. All ketosis is, is the body’s way of letting a person know it’s starting to use fat for its primary source of fuel, not sugar. It’s a sign, not a medical crisis!
Another myth (and again, this has been perpetuated on Pinterest) is that a person can pretty much eat any fat they want, as long as they are choosing fat over other macronutrients. SO not true!
And lastly, people have heard this one, for sure, that their brain needs glucose to operate. Where does glucose come from? Carbs! But here’s why a person doesn’t need carbs to make that happen.
There’s a process called gluconeogenesis, which means the body converts protein to glucose and that is what feeds the brain. As a matter of fact, there is science that supports that this is superior fuel for the human brain!
For people considering the keto diet, it's important to take note that yes this is a high-fat diet, but that doesn't mean you can eat all the fat you want. Everything must be eaten in moderation and you must cut out the majority of carbs while incorporating a healthy combination of healthy fats and protein.
What's nice about the keto diet is that once a body is in ketosis it'll begin burning fat and you'll see lasting benefits from these positive changes. More keto diet myths are debunked on The Pyramid.
