There are many methods known to improve one’s health, and most of them are fairly straightforward. In the Body Reboot book, we discuss how the keto diet can help improve a person’s health by eating a high fat, low carb diet. Eating a diet high in fat may sound strange, but it really works. The body is forced to burn fat instead of glucose, which leads to weight loss and other health benefits. Try the keto diet and be pleasantly surprised at its many ways to transform health. Besides the keto diet, there are other strange but true health tips. Below are 9 of them:
1. Drink coffee to sleep
Many drink coffee to stay awake, but it just so happens that you can drink coffee to sleep too. Medium explains why that’s the case:
In a Japanese study that inspected how to take advantage of a nap, individuals who took an “coffee nap” — devouring around 200 milligrams of caffeine (the sum in one to some coffee) and after that quickly taking a 20-moment rest — felt more ready and performed preferred on PC tests over the individuals who just nap.
Why does this work? A 20-moment nap closes pretty much as the caffeine kicks in and clears the cerebrum of a particle called adenosine, boosting readiness. “Adenosine is a side effect of attentiveness and movement,” says Allen Towfigh, MD, therapeutic executive of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine. “As adenosine levels expand, we turn out to be more exhausted. Snoozing gets out the adenosine and, when joined with caffeine, an adenosine-blocker, further decreases its belongings and opens up the impacts of the nap.”
2. Eat nuts to lose weight
Eating nuts is something that works well on the keto diet, since they’re high in fat. Healthline explains how eating nuts can help you lose weight, and the same is true of other foods high in fat.
Despite being high in fat, nuts are incredibly nutritious and healthy.
They’re loaded with magnesium, vitamin E, fiber, and various other nutrients.
Studies demonstrate that nuts can help you lose weight and may help fight type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Additionally, your body doesn’t absorb 10–15% of the calories in nuts. Some evidence also suggests that this food can boost metabolism.
In one study, almonds were shown to increase weight loss by 62%, compared with complex carbs.
3. Eat fat to lose weight
Mind Body Green argues that eating fat can help you lose weight, and we happen to agree! After all, we’ve been encouraging you to try the keto diet throughout this article so far! When you eat food high in fat and lower in carbohydrates your body is forced to burn fat. The result is your body burns fat at a much higher rate and weight loss takes place.
This type of study allows researchers to study the effects on metabolism for different diets on the same person, creating a more accurate, comprehensive picture about the most effective eating plan. While their ratios of carbs, proteins, and fats differed, both groups ate the exact same number of calories.
What happened was shocking. The high-fat group ended up burning 300 more calories a day than the low-fat group. The high-fat group also had the most improvements in cholesterol, including lower triglycerides, lower LDL, and lower levels of PIA-1, which shows less likelihood of having blood clots or inflammation. They also showed bigger improvements with insulin resistance or pre-diabetes.
The take-home message here is that most of your fat-cell biology becomes controlled by the quality and type of food you eat. That explains why we should eat a whole-foods diet that’s lower in refined carbohydrates, low-glycemic, and high in fiber and quality fat — including avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts and seeds, and eggs.
4. Exercising when you’re tired gives you energy
Usually, the last thing you want to do when you’re tired is exercise, but Health says that’s exactly what you need to do. The reason you should exercise even though you’re tired is that the endorphins from exercise will give you energy.
After a long, exhausting workday, exercising sounds like the last thing you'd want to do, but getting your sweat on will actually energize you. Fatigue along with mood and depression improved after a single 30-minute moderate intensity exercise session, according to a study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. “Everything we do uses oxygen, so when you exercise it helps you work more efficiently and you don't tire as easily,” says Nutting. “You also function better mentally.”
5. Drink water to reduce bloating
Water is magical, and it can help with bloating. According to Medium, you should treat water like your BFF because water is what’s going to allow your body to deal with discomfort.
When you feel bloated, drinking water sounds as though it would just exacerbate matters, yet it can regularly help, says James Lee, MD, gastroenterologist with St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif. In case you’re on a high-fiber diet, for case, then your body needs more water to work all the more productively, says Dr. Lee. “Water blends with water dissolvable fiber and makes it into a gel like substance. This influences the motility of the gut and lessens the indication of bloating.” Drinking more water additionally eases bloating brought on by lack of hydration. When you’re dried out, your body sticks to the water your body has, making you puff up.
6. Probiotics help with your gut health
Some people aren’t too fond of probiotics, and we can’t blame them. Everyone is suggesting to take something these days. However, Healthline seems to think that probiotics can help your gut health and prevent disease.
The bacteria in your gut, collectively called the gut microbiota, are incredibly important for overall health.
A disruption in gut bacteria is linked to some of the world’s most serious chronic diseases, including obesity.
Good ways to improve gut health include eating probiotic foods like yogurt and sauerkraut, taking probiotic supplements, and eating plenty of fiber. Notably, fiber functions as fuel for your gut bacteria.
7. Avoid junk food to feel better
This health tip should come as no surprise, but it’s sad how many people ignore it. Avoid junk food and Healthline says you’ll feel better. It makes sense considering you’ll be getting rid of the food that disagrees with your body and replacing it with healthy food instead.
Processed junk food is incredibly unhealthy.
These foods have been engineered to trigger your pleasure centers, so they trick your brain into overeating — even promoting food addiction in some people.
They’re usually low in fiber, protein, and micronutrients but high in unhealthy ingredients like added sugar and refined grains. Thus, they provide mostly empty calories.
A study by Curr Drug Abuse Rev. in 2011 discusses food addiction and how it can lead to bad habits.
Scientific interest in “food addiction” continues to grow due both to neurobiological and behavioral similarities between substance dependence and excessive food consumption. An important next step is to examine the addictive potential of highly processed foods. In this paper, we explore addiction-related changes in the modern food environment (e.g., increased potency, elevated speed of absorption), examine the historical and modern understanding of addictive substances as applied to hyperpalatable foods, and outline shared factors that increase the public health costs of both addictive drugs and certain foods.
Real Simple offers a few quotes from people who have learned how unhealthy food affects their body and what they did to improve their healthy eating habits.
I am amazed by how paying closer attention to how food affects my body and then adjusting my diet accordingly has affected my overall health. For instance, after discovering that a lack of fat in my meals caused an upset stomach and bloating, I started eating more healthy fats. I have dropped 15 pounds and am experiencing less joint and muscle soreness.
—Jill L. Lindsey, Lebanon, Ohio
Sugar has always been my biggest vice. I used to eat dessert after lunch, and I would start thinking about my nighttime dessert even before dinner. Now I refrain from having multiple desserts a day and satisfy my sweet tooth with a piece of dark chocolate or a handful of raspberries instead of ice cream. Besides not having to deal with the constant crashes and the cravings, I enjoy the sweets that I do eat more than before.
—Abby Pfeiffer, Portland, Oregon
8. Read away stress
It’s true that reading is good for the soul, and according to Reader’s Digest, it can help keep stress away! So grab and book and read away the stress!
A good read can lower levels of unhealthy stress hormones such as cortisol. Participants in a British study engaged in an anxiety-provoking activity and then either read for a few minutes, listened to music, or played video games. Reading was 68 percent better at reducing stress levels than listening to music. And a little bit of reading goes a long way— six minutes of reading reduces stress levels by 67 percent.
