Research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews
detailed a study of 30 adults diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that increase risk of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease, so it merits serious research and action.
The participants in the study were randomly placed in three groups: one ate a ketogenic diet, but did not exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didn't exercise, and the third group ate a standard American diet and exercised 30 minutes per day, up to five days a week. Over the ten-week study, the researchers wrote, “All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups.” The keto group's resting metabolic rate was more than 10 times that of people who ate the standard diet. That means the rate at which their bodies burned energy when doing no exercise was 10 times the rate of the standard diet-eating groups!
The study also measured “significant” changes in the ketogenic group's body fat percentage, weight and ketones (the indication of the body burning fat for energy).
