Embarking on a new diet is exciting and at the same time daunting, especially since it possibly means not being able to eat some food favorites. However, one exciting thing about the keto diet, which is a low-carb, high-fat diet, is that there’s no need to give up favorite foods! Well, except for potato chips and candy! However, even if there’s a sweet tooth to keep at bay, there are still plenty of keto-friendly snacks that’ll help a person stay in ketosis (which is the process where a body burns ketones for energy as opposed to glucose). And yes, that includes finding foods that can substitute chips and candy.
Want to learn about some of the tasty keto approved snacks that’ll keep you sane while on a diet? Yeah, we do too. Keep reading to learn more and check out the Body Reboot book to give you the full scoop on how the keto diet can transform your life (plus check out some tasty treats there, too)!
Sandwich on a Stick
If you’re missing snacking on a sandwich, you can create a sandwich keto style! Buy some skewers and stack on some cheese and meat, and you’ll have it made! Women’s Health dishes on how to create this yummy keto snack:
“Missing sandwiches? Try serving them on a stick. Spear a small piece of ham or chicken, a little cube of cheese, and some tomato or bell pepper, and you've got a bite-sized “sandwich.” “This can give you some protein and fat with very few carbs,” Cording says. One or two toothpicks should tide you over between meals. They also make a cute appetizer to serve at keto-friendly parties.”
Cream Cheese
Who can say no to cream cheese? It’s pretty hard to say no to this yummy cheesy snack. Serve it up with a favorite veggie, such as a cucumber and Essential Keto thinks you’ll have a perfect way to dig in and enjoy!
Cream Cheese is one of those must have items for your ketogenic kitchen.
For a quick bite, scoop out a teaspoon full and enjoy…
Or use as a dip with celery, cucumber or other low carb vegetables.
Seaweed
A seaweed snack can be tasty but deceiving, so don’t assume you can have a seaweed salad from your favorite Japanese restaurant. However, you can eat seaweed if it doesn’t have any added carbs. In other words, make sure you check those nutrition labels before scarfing any down. Otherwise, as Perfect Keto suggests, they make an excellent keto snack.
“Make sure there aren’t any added ingredients that contribute extra carbs. Also make sure there aren’t weird flavors or massive amounts of oils in these. They can be added as an extra crunch that you can sometimes miss on keto!”
Hard Boiled Eggs
Forkly has many excellent Keto snack ideas, and one of them is rather simple but very tasty! Plus, this keto-favorite is very keto friendly! Yes, we realize we just said keto three times in two sentences.
“Make them in a large batch (heck, why not the whole dozen?) all at once, and have them ready for grabbing on the go as you need them throughout the week.
There are some places that you can buy them pre-made, but if you’ve got a pot, some water, and some eggs – you can do this all on your own (we believe in you!).”
Beef Jerky
Hello, beef jerky! Can we just say yum?! Thrive/Strive seems to agree with us on this delicious snack. Plus, it’s easy to bring with you everywhere. Stick it in your backpack and rock on!
“When it comes to beef jerky you don’t want to buy anything that you find at the gas station. The problem with that stuff is that it is usually packed with sugar.
Instead, you want to find to find jerky that is carb-free which can be difficult if you just go down to your grocery store. There are plenty of options that you can find online thankfully.
Right now I’m really enjoying Nick’s Sticks which are made from grass-fed beef. The benefit of grass-fed beef is that it is packed with omega-3 which is a definite plus from a midnight snack.”
Nuts
Another simple yet tasty snack? Nuts! Nuts have vital nutrients for a keto dieter and taste delicious with added salt. Just be careful only to eat nuts that are lower in carbs and also a handful at a time because the carbs from nuts can add up rather quickly. Perfect Keto has more on nutty snacks below:
“Nuts or nut butters and seeds: Remember some nuts are fairly high in carbs (like peanuts, cashews, and pistachios). Stay away from any nut butters that have added polyunsaturated oils or “vegetable oils.” Choose higher fats choices, such as almonds or macadamia nuts, and seeds high in omega 3s like flaxseed and chia. Nuttzo is a great choice for a blend of good nuts.”
Zucchini Chips
Forkly also recommends another yummy snack that is seriously underrated. Want to know what it is? Yummy zucchini chips! You should definitely make them and find out for yourself just how delicious they are:
Something you can make in advance for a healthy snack option for now or for later! Zucchini is incredibly low-carb and mild in taste so you can bake some up and flavor as you choose.
Try topping with seasonings that mimic your favorite potato chip to keep those carb cravings at bay!
Pickles
Not everyone is crazy for pickles, but if you are they make a great keto snack, even on the go! Miss Fit Living recommends putting a few in a container and heading to your destination – pickle in hand.
“I love to eat pickles on their own. The crunch and saltiness help with those crisps cravings! I also like to put a few in a small container and put it in my handbag when I’m running errands.
Tip – make sure the lid seals really well so none of the juices leak! Also, I wouldn’t do this on a very hot day.”
String Cheese
Remember eating string cheese in middle school? Yeah, it’s a pretty good snack. The good news is it can be a yummy snack again, but this time for keto! Miss Fit Living recommends grabbing some for the road; it’s time to have a great time with some yummy fat-filled snacks!
“Look for the full-fat versions to keep on hand. This is a snack I wouldn’t recommend keeping in your purse in summer, as the cheese could melt. But during the fall and winter, it will hold up just fine.”
Keto Chicken Fingers
Who says you can’t have chicken fingers while on the keto diet? The steps are easy to make this tasty keto snack recommended on Dr. Axe!
“The low-carb “breading” on these tenders produces a crispy exterior just like your favorite restaurant chicken tenders. You’ll first dip each chicken piece in an egg-and-cream wash, then dip it into seasoned almond flour, which is gluten-free and contains no grains. You’ll bake the chicken to perfection and then sauce the tenders to order. Best of all, this method works great anytime you want crispy chicken, saucy or not!”
Steak Bites
If you love steak, then you’re going to like this idea… steak bites! Great idea, right? This snack is perfect if you’re craving something tasty that’s usually a meal, except, this time it isn’t. It’s a delicious keto snack! Thanks, Women’s Health!
“Yes, steak—or, to be more specific—steak bites, can totally be an awesome keto diet snack, Warren says. Here's how to make them: chop up sirloin steak, season with soy sauce, Worcester sauce, and garlic, and sauté. Then, put them in the fridge until you’re ready to eat them.”
Protein Bars
Protein bars are a fantastic alternative to sugar-filled granola bars and come packed full of protein and other essential nutrients. Shape recommends a particular brand, but many other brands offer tasty yet nutrient-rich protein bars when you want something yummy.
“You could have fooled us: Bulletproof's Collagen Protein Bars taste just about as good as the cookie flavors they're inspired by, including vanilla shortbread, mint chocolate chip, fudge brownie, chocolate chip cookie dough, and lemon cookie. The texture is crumbly and buttery, with no weird aftertaste (!). Made with organic cashew butter, the bars are grain- and gluten-free and have a ratio of 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and 5 percent carb. They're a little higher than Jalali's 3-gram carb recommendation for a snack, but if you can budget some wiggle room into your day for one of these bars, it'll be totally worth it.”
