Cravings are something real that we all deal with, regardless as to whether we're on a diet or not. Yes, going on a low carb diet can eliminate some of those cravings, but it still may pop up from time to time or regularly, depending on you and your body.
If you haven't yet heard of the keto diet, according to the Body Reboot book it's a diet that pushes your body into ketosis when you eat fat as opposed to carbohydrates. Your body uses the fats you are eating as its fuel source, which leads to weight loss, more energy, and fewer cravings. It turns out eating protein and fat as opposed to carbs has many benefits, including reducing your cravings for sugar and other snacks. However, there are still some hurdles to overcome, but the tips below can help you learn how to curb your snacking and instead, have a successful diet.
The first, and most important, thing you need to assess is WHY are you experiencing cravings. I cannot stress this enough. If you don’t get to the bottom of why, you are not going to succeed in beating the cravings.
So you crave the same things that you used to crave. Fortunately, this kind of craving is the simplest to deal with. You might not like the answer, but the reality is, you just have to ignore it. You’re bored. You’re not going to die if you don’t eat the gross foods that made you fat, lazy, and foggy. You’re just going to have to take the time to build a better, more healthier habit.
However, there are some physiological cravings that occur, too. Physiological cravings are real. They are a way for your body to tell you what you are missing. These cravings are important, and you should pay attention to them.
If you’re craving salty foods, like chips and pizza
You may need tryptophan or chloride. Munch on cheese, unsalted cottage cheese, fish, or spinach (add salt). If you’re craving chocolate
You may need magnesium. It’s important to make sure you keep a good amount of salt (sodium, potassium, and magnesium) in your diet (at least 2 tsp/day) anyway. If you’re craving carbonated beverages
You might need to increase your mineral intake. Have some spinach, kale, or collard greens.
So every time you feel like snacking on something sweet or salt, think of the vitamins your body may be lacking or craving. And if you're a chocolate lover you will be happy to learn that you can still eat chocolate, but just not any kind. If you get chocolate at your local store make sure it's 75% or higher dark chocolate. Milk chocolate is good, but it's not good to eat while you're on the keto diet. Luckily dark chocolate should help solve your chocolate craving. For more on how to eliminate cravings head to Perfect Keto.
